Description

The aim of this course is to impart some key ideas in regard to the skills of acting and directing. The course will be structured around these two related areas of the theater. Selected Italian and European dramatists’ works will form the core of the texts utilized for performance purposes. Within suitable space, students will be encouraged to perform from appropriate plays, ranging from Shakespeare to Italian dramatists including Pirandello and Dario Fo. Key sequences of dialogue will be acted out and students will be taught about the basic concepts of diction, enunciation, and how to project the voice. The second part of the course will detail some of the talents and abilities a stage director needs, including his attention to blocking (the way in which actors move and what parts of the stage they utilize), his conception of the play’s characters, and what kind of levels of performance he is bringing to the production.
