Description

This course will explore the history of the primary form of organized crime in Sicily, the Cosa Nostra. The Sicilian mafia gave birth to the American one. Some of the most famous American Mafiosi, men like Lucky Luciano and Al Capone, will be taken into consideration to understand the connections, the similarities, and the differences between the two criminal networks in the historical perspective and today. The course will also study antimafia developments and how the mafia still flourishes and how the mafia issue has an international resonance. The course will examine primarily the Sicilian Mafia, but also the other Italian crime syndicates such as Camorra (Southern Region of Campania, Capital Naples), and ‘Ndrangheta (Southern Region of Calabria).
