Description

Uncover the architecture of Brunelleschi and Michelangelo at San Lorenzo.

Come and discover two amazing sites of World Architecture right here in Florence at the San Lorenzo Basilica complex. Long before the present-day cathedral was built with its magnificent dome, San Lorenzo stood as the first cathedral of Florence. It was founded in the 4th century outside the old city walls and remained the city’s cathedral for about 300 years. The structure we see today is the result of a complete renovation of the church with the patronage of the powerful Medici family. Enter inside the Basilica of San Lorenzo and its Old Sacristy, a space designed by the first true Renaissance architect, Filippo Brunelleschi. Then step inside the New Sacristy of San Lorenzo, a captivating space where Michelangelo brought together his creative genius in both sculpture and architecture. Learn about the principles and origins of Renaissance architecture and its development, from Brunelleschi’s rediscovery of the ancient world to the revolutionary designs by Michelangelo.
