STUDENT ELIGIBILITY and
POLICY OF NON-DISCRIMINATION
Program participants do not necessarily have to come from an institution that offers a study abroad program.
The STUDY ABROAD EXPERIENCE is a unique experience. It requires a great deal of individual stability and maturity as well as commitment on the student's part to make it a rewarding one, both academically and personally.
STUDENT SELECTION is based on academic achievement as well as seriousness of purpose and individual stability and maturity. The GPA (Grade Point Average) is important and it is requested on the on-line application form, but it is not the only issue taken into consideration. NECA also considers other factors to understand if a student meets certain requirements, both academic and non, to study abroad.
FOR SPECIAL ENROLLMENTS students in their freshmen year or high shcool graduates can send their on-line application and request an appointment for a telephone or on-line interview (on Skype, Yahoo Messenger, MSN, etc.) to verify if and how to accept them in the program.
STUDENTS ENROLLED in study abroad programs are expected to be able to overcome cultural differences and adapt to a new environment while doing the required work for their courses.
We kindly remind all applicants that NECA not any U.S. university or college is the institution to be contacted for any logistical issues. Although NECA students will earn credits through a transcript of an American university, students will be in Florence a NECA student not a student of any other academic institution.
NECA does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, or disability in their policies and Programs.
TRANSFER CREDIT and TRANSCRIPT
Upon successful completion of each course, enrolled students earn transfer academic undergraduate credits (if not through their home institution) through a transcript of Daemen College, NY, USA.
Students can visit the NECA web page on the Daemen College website:
www.daemen.edu/offices/globalprograms/studyabroad/studyinflorence/Pages/default.aspx.
The update of this web page does not depend on NECA but only on Daemen College staff. Since students will study at NECA, not at Daemen College, please refer to the NECA brochure file that NECA will e-mail you once you inquire.
The transcript will include course titles and numbers, grades, and credit hours. This transcript will be sent directly to the student's home institution for transfer credit.
Before coming to Florence students should check with their home institution:
1) For the proper procedure regarding the transfer of credits.
2) If the courses that they will take at NECA fulfill their degree requirements.
Although at NECA students will take 4 to 6 courses (for semesters) and 1-2 for Summer programs), it is best to meet with your school advisor and obtain approval for 7-8 courses (for semesters) or 3-4 (for Summer programs). Courses are generally approved as requirements for your major, but also as elective credits.
NECA is available to assist students with their enrollment procedure by contacting their student advisors.
NECA is not responsible if the student has not talked to his or her advisor and made sure if the courses taken at NECA will fulfill his or her degree requirements at his or her home institution. This is a student’s responsibility. In Florence NECA may try but cannot do anything to help. NECA guarantees students the transcripts, but it is up to the student to verify if the courses added to the transcript fulfill his or her degree requirements.
For LANGUAGE COURSES the student must verify that each course is at the required level to earn valuable credits at his or her home institution.
NECA is available to contact the student's home institution to provide the student with individual attention and make sure that the courses taken at NECA will fulfill his or her degree requirements at his or her home institution.
We kindly remind all applicants that NECA not any U.S. university or college is the institution to be contacted for any logistical issues. Although NECA students will earn credits through a transcript of an American university, students will be in Florence a NECA student not a student of any other academic institution.

INSURANCE
Students must be covered by a Health Insurance at their own expense. Insurance is to cover:
1) MEDICAL/HEALTH PROBLEMS;
2) EMERGENCY EVACUATION.
Note: Most U.S. based Health coverage does NOT include these.
Students must provide NECA at the orientation program in Florence with copies of such health insurance policies. The proof of insurance must include the participant's name and dates of coverage -- Start date and End date (covering the duration of the program).
Students must be covered by a Health Insurance at their own expense. Insurance is to cover:
1) MEDICAL/HEALTH PROBLEMS;
2) EMERGENCY EVACUATION.
Note: Most U.S. based Health coverage does NOT include these.
Emergency Evacuation is not necessary to request the visa (for students who need a visa) but it is necessary to be admitted to the program. At the orientation program in Italy the student (not his or her university or college) must give NECA written proof of insurance coverage and of coverage of emergency evacuation for his or her entire stay in Italy. If at the orientation you show us a photocopy it is ok provided that it is specified that both medical/health problems AND emergency evacuation are covered.
Students can purchase an ISIC Card (International Student ID card), which includes insurance. You can visit www.myisic.com and/or www.wallach.com to purchase the insurance.
-You should ask for prices and what is covered.
-Make sure if there is a minimum amount of expenses, below which you would NOT be reimbursed.
-You should also ask to be provided a LETTER STATING THAT ISIC OR WALLACH INSURANCE COVER WHAT IS REQUESTED BY THE ITALIAN LAW TO GET THE VISA PLUS EMERGENCY EVACUATION (not necessary to request the visa but mandatory to be admitted to the program).
NECA is not responsible for those students who enter Italy without an insurance, or without an insurance that covers both medical/health problems and emergency evacuation.
Participants are also to provide NECA with personal information (i.e. allergies, special diet, and emergency contact numbers) once they have been accepted into the Program. NECA assures that this information will be kept strictly confidential, according to Italian privacy law (Law #675 of 1996).
-NO RESPONSIBILITY: NECA will not be responsible for damages to or loss of property, personal illness or injury, or death while a student is on the Program, including NECA and any other facilities, course-related field trips, excursions, at home stay, apartment or hotel, travelling, and the like.
